STAR ("Standing for Truth About Radiation") is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and safety from nuclear hazards. STAR actively promotes alternative and renewable energy technologies as the available solution to fossil fuel and nuclear-generated power. We also work to ensure public awareness, civic oversight, objective scientific research, and greater government and corporate accountability. Recent events have given STAR's mission a new urgency, for in addition to our original safety concerns, it is now clear that U.S. nuclear power plants are vulnerable to a terrorist attack. We believe that the more the public knows about these dangers, the more politicians and corporations will be forced to act to change conditions at these plants. STAR believes that every American has the right to live without fear of radioactive contamination. That also means the right to know what could harm you — and the right to take action to prevent disasters from occurring. That's why while STAR works to increase public awareness, we have several interim goals related to safety advocacy, legal initiatives, and research. Specifically, they are:
Our immediate priority is to make the plants in the New York area safer. With more than 24 million people in the New York area living within 50 miles of a reactor, better safety and security at these plants has always been a need. Now, with the real threat of terrorism, it is even more important that these safety concerns be resolved for all 103 reactors in America. But these are just some of our goals to help improve our country's safety. Our success depends on active involvement from people like you. We presently have the support of more than 4,000 members and continue to grow. By staying aware and by supporting our efforts to raise the awareness of others, you can help us protect America's future. |
