Christie Brinkley has been active all her life in the causes she
believes in. From her early opposition to the war in Vietnam to her
well-known position as a proponent for health and fitness, Christie
has always taken a passionate approach to her endeavors.
Christie's involvement in exposing the risks of radiation began as
early as the late 1960s with her opposition to the construction of
California reactors. In 1986 she visited post-Chernobyl Russia with
a Geiger counter in hand for her first of several visits with Russian
President Gorbachev.
Christie first became active with STAR as a concerned mother, raising
three children within 17 miles of the Millstone reactor near New York.
She and her husband, Peter Cook, chairman of STAR, joined the board in
1998.
As a STAR board member, Christie has participated in numerous public
discussions and met with public officials at every level of government,
including former Energy Secretary Bill Richardson and former President
Bill Clinton. In January 2002 she testified before a Senate subcommittee
on the reauthorization of the Price-Anderson Act, dealing with how
citizens are to be compensated in the event of a nuclear accident.
As a result of her work, Christie has become the national spokesperson
not only for STAR but also for millions of parents and citizens concerned
about safety and security around our country's nuclear reactors. Beyond
her financial contributions, STAR would like to acknowledge the
immeasurable visibility and support received from Christie Brinkley and
thank her for her extraordinary fundraising efforts on behalf of the
cause.
