Are you doing everything you can to protect your family and your future?

Five years ago, we asked ourselves this same question. And the answer was a resounding "no." With the grave dangers of nuclear power, we saw a problem that not only could affect those close to us but also could have a devastating impact on millions of people.

STAR ("Standing for Truth About Radiation") was our solution for doing something about it.

Initially we were concerned about the two nuclear reactors near our homes, at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Then we began focusing on the three much larger nuclear power stations in the New York metropolitan area, where 24 million people live within 50 miles of one of these reactors. Soon we recognized that we were among many citizens living in the shadow of nuclear power reactors and expanded our interest to address the safety of all the country's 103 nuclear power plants.

The terrorist attack on the United States sharpened our focus. With the threat of terrorism now present at home, STAR has accelerated our efforts to protect public health and safety. This involves heightening our warnings of the devastating consequences terrorism presents to our country's nuclear power facilities. It also includes introducing a campaign to ensure that we have a regional energy supply that's safe for the future.

To support these efforts, STAR has been undertaking legal, political, and public policy initiatives to help preserve our future. And in the coming months, we will launch a comprehensive media campaign to create even greater awareness about our nuclear power vulnerabilities and their threat to your security.

These are difficult times, and no one can predict the future. But with your help we will work diligently to ensure clean, safe energy and a healthy environment for you and your family — for generations.

We appreciate your support.

Sincerely,

Peter Cook, Board Chairman
